-Highly recommended for a beginner who can afford a good guitar !
Back in 2002, John Mayer burst onto the national music scene with hits like “No Such Thing” and “Your Body is a Wonderland.” In the following year, Martin introduced the OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition guitar for John Mayer. Not surprised at all, even people who has never known John Mayer, the limited edition of 404 instruments sold out quickly and completely.
In late 2003, John Mayer released the album ‘ Heavier Things’, two hit singles, “Bigger than My Body” and “Daughters,” the second of which won Grammys for “Song of the Year” and “Best Male Pop Vocal of the Year.” Touring in 2004 took him to Australia, Europe, Canada and across the United States and included a memorable performance at the Crossroads Guitar Festival.
In 2005 he joined forces with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan to create the John Mayer Trio, playing electric blues in a series of sold-out shows: the two-night stand at the House of Blues in Chicago was recorded for “The John Mayer Trio Live in Concert,” an album released in November. He also took time out to perform at benefit concerts for Hurricane Katrina relief in Atlanta and New York.
With an expanding reputation and loyal fan base, the number of OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition guitars produced began to look awfully small. So, Martin company asked John Mayer if he would create a second namesake guitar, one with many of the same attributes as his first, but one that would be more affordable and more widely available in the tradition of the wildly popular Martin 000-28EC Eric Clapton. He would and he did: The Martin OMJM John Mayer Special Edition.
Martin OMJM John Mayer Special Edition features Engelmann spruce top and east indian rosewood sides and back for warm and rich tone. The scalloped “Hybrid” bracing enhances the full timbre of this tonewood combination. Body appointments are also similar, with a Style 45 rosette featuring a center ring of colorful abalone shell, bold herringbone around the top, black/white back purfling around the back, grained ivoroid binding throughout, a HD style zigzag back strip, a traditional OM teardrop polished and beveled tortoiseshell pickguard. To enhance the beauty of the wood, a specially formulated vintage “aging” toner is applied and then the polished nitocellulose gloss lacquer completes the picture. Other features include a black African ebony bridge with compensated TUSQ saddle, Style 45 white bridge pins inlaid with abalone and that jewel-like nitrocellulose gloss lacquer finish.
The Spanish cedar neck with diamond volute is carved with playing comfort in mind, combining 1-11/16″ width and low profile neck shape for easy fretting. The East Indian rosewood headplate sports Martin’s Old Style decal in silver rather than the familiar gold (another nod to the OM-28JM John Mayer Signature Edition) and nickel Gotoh open-geared tuners with butterbean knobs. The black African ebony fingerboard highlights 1/8″ mother of pearl position markers at the 5th, 7th (two), 9th, 15th and 17th frets, a unique 12th fret position marker of two dots flanking a slotted square, and John Mayer’s signature inlaid in mother of pearl between the 19th and 20th frets.
To provide a touch of his personal style to the Martin OMJM John Mayer Special Edition guitar, John Mayer has created a unique art deco-inspired monogram, which is embroidered on the special vintage Geib style hardshell case. Each guitar in this open series bears an interior label imprinted with the signatures of John Mayer and Martin Chairman C. F. Martin IV, and individually numbered in sequence.
Many acoustics – and yes, even some premium quality instruments – come with optional electronics packages or even “off-the-shelf” units which can save some money, but ultimately compromises the amplified sound. For the Martin OMJM John Mayer Signature Edition, the Martin luthiers carefully selected a Martin Gold Plus system that would be factory installed in the guitar. This results in an amazingly detailed amplified sound that’s never harsh or brittle sounding.

Martin OMJM john mayer actual reviews:
‘ Martin OMJM is a tone monster. I have one of their Early Edition OMJM number under 300 Originally went to purchase OM 28 And then tried a OMJM Not only was the tone better then the OM28 it played a lot better love the neck could not let it go No Regrets will never let this go a family heirloom at this point The premium spruce on the OMJM model ages like a fine wine This guitar is special Going on 15 years now The special woods has opened up to produce a whole spectrum of angelic tones! Did I mention this guitar is Drop Dead Gorgeous curves and all the right places The smaaldel plays amazing and can cover many styles of playing country alternative strumming finger picking you name it.’
‘Martin OMJM Guitar -I have owned my Martin OMJM John Mayer special edition guitar for two months. It is incredible. The tone and sustain are beyond measure. Originally I sought a Martin D28 as I yearned for that booming bass. I am not disappointed in the Martin OMJM, plenty of bass for me – perfectly balanced with the highs. The OMJM sounds good (plenty loud) when played unplugged, and is ever so sweet to the ears when plugged in . I know when I pull it out of the plush snug fitting Martin Geib case I will be pickin’ for hours as I will not want to put it down. I am continually surprised at the sounds I can make with it both on the high and on the low end. It is a perfect fit for this 5’2″ girl with not so long arms. The neck is fast and easy to play and came direct from the factory with a set up perfect for me. I would recommend this Martin OMJM John Mayer Signature Guitar for any beginner who can afford a good guitar – why waste your time with a beginner guitar when this one will teach you how to play. I keep a fresh humidifier in the case at all times as I live in Utah where it is an extremely dry climate. I know this special edition guitar will only sound better with age, and is truly a tribute to John Mayer – he would be proud.”
